About the project
The Brief
Marius du Plooy Tours approached us to document the journey of renowned Afrikaans writer, Dana Snyman, as he experienced the serene canal boats of France. The project was destined for a TV production on KykNet, one of South Africa’s premier Afrikaans channels. The goal was to capture Dana’s reactions and experiences in a diary-like, documentary style, bringing his unique storytelling to life through video. Additionally, the production needed to incorporate Dana’s voice-over narrative, infusing his distinct writing style into the final edit. The brief also called for the inclusion of footage shot by Dana, providing his personal perspective.
The Solution
To achieve the desired documentary style, we focused on capturing Dana’s authentic experiences aboard the canal boats, blending personal reflections with candid interactions with other guests. We filmed Dana’s natural reactions, as well as his interactions with the beautiful surroundings of the French canals, creating an intimate portrayal of his journey. The voice-over featuring Dana’s iconic storytelling was recorded and interwoven throughout the production, complementing the visuals and adding depth to the narrative. We also integrated footage that Dana himself filmed, offering a personal point of view to the story and enhancing the overall authenticity of the piece.
Involvement
Our role extended from filming the entire adventure on the canal boats to editing and compiling the final TV-ready production. The footage included not only Dana’s experiences but also interactions with other guests on the tour, whom he seamlessly wove into his narrative. The final production, showcasing Dana's voice-over and unique visual storytelling, was broadcast on KykNet, providing viewers with an engaging and immersive travel documentary. The editing process highlighted the beauty of the French canals, Dana’s reflective commentary, and the unique perspective that both he and the tour provided.
